Common requirements when applying for a PERFORMING ARTS DEGREE

AUDITION BOOKS
SONG SELECTIONS
MONOLOGUE SELECTIONS
WILDCARDS
FORMATTING THE BOOK
MARKING THE MUSIC

For a musical theatre college audition, you should have 8 to 12 fully prepared songs in your audition book. While most universities only require you to perform two contrasting pieces for the initial audition, faculty will often ask to hear something else from your binder to test your vocal versatility, coaching adaptability, and overall preparedness.

AUDITION PRESCREEN
CHOREOGRAPHED DANCE SLATING
FILMING
EDITING
SUBMISSIONS

Students must film digital individual videos for each university or college performing arts application and then edit them according to the college requirements. Video auditions that students must submit in late autumn to qualify for a live callback are a preliminary round: because performing arts programs receive thousands of applications for tiny class sizes, faculty use these videos to filter out the top tier of talent before booking travel slots.

SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL
HEAD SHOT

PROFESSIONAL RESUME
SUPPLEMENTAL ESSAYS

For college musical theatre applications, your headshot and resume are your physical calling cards. You will upload digital copies to your prescreen portals (like Acceptd) and bring physical 8x10 prints to your live callbacks. Because university auditions are for training programs rather than professional jobs, the formatting rules are highly specific.

ACADEMIC APPLICATION
COLLEGE PORTALS
COMMONG APPLICATION
REQUIRED ESSAYS

Applying for a musical theatre major requires balancing two completely separate application tracks: the Academic Track (getting into the university) and the Artistic Track (getting into the theatre department).

You must pass both to be accepted. If you excel at your audition but fail the university’s academic requirements, the school cannot admit you.

LIVE AUDITIONS
UNIFIEDS
ON-CAMPUS AUDITIONS

National Unified Auditions (commonly called "Unifieds") are massive, multi-day weekend events where dozens of the top college musical theatre and acting programs gather in one central location to conduct their live auditions. Instead of traveling to 10 different states to visit individual college campuses, you can audition for 10 to 20 different universities in a single weekend, all under one roof. Locations include New York, Chicago and LA.

TIMELINE & DEADLINES

The musical theatre timeline moves much faster than a standard college application process. If you miss a fall academic deadline, you forfeit your audition slot.

  • August – September: The Common App opens. Start your academic essays and build your university lists.

  • October – November: Submit your academic applications. Many top programs require you to submit your university application before you are allowed to upload your digital prescreens.

  • November 1 / November 15: Hard deadlines for early action or priority artistic consideration at many top-tier institutions.

  • January – February: Live callbacks (on-campus or at Unifieds).

  • March – April: Final acceptance notifications arrive.

  • May 1: National Decision Day. You must officially commit to one program.
